The placement of the modern Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) boat in Romblon province will greatly enhance maritime monitoring and response capabilities, according to Coast Guard Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan.
Gavan assured the people of Romblon during the inauguration and blessing of the new High-Speed Response Boat (HSRB)-009 in the town of San Agustin, Romblon on April 4.
With the introduction of the HSRB, a Filipino-made vessel designed to conduct missions in the country’s coastal territories, Gavan stated that the PCG’s response at sea, particularly in the island municipalities, will be expedited in case of accidents, search and rescue operations, and maritime patrols.
Romblon consists of 22 islands, including 4 small island municipalities, and 3 major islands composed of Tablas, Romblon, and Sibuyan.
The PCG highlighted that the HSRB is equipped with advanced features, including gun mounts, wide-range radar, and medical equipment. Additionally, the boat can achieve a full speed of not less than 40 knots, enabling it to reach Romblon Island from San Agustin in only 15-20 minutes.
Expressing his excitement, Romblon Governor Jose Riano announced that the Provincial Government would provide a fuel supply for the boat to carry out its missions through the Provincial Peace and Order Council. He also pledged ongoing collaboration and investment to enhance the organization’s operational capacity and effectiveness.
“This boat is really what we need in the province because we are surrounded by the sea. We have so many island municipalities here that really need a speed boat,” Riano said.
Meanwhile, Gavan also acknowledges Romblon Congressman Eleandro Madrona’s key role in crafting the Philippine Coast Guard Law of 2009, shaping the organization’s current state, and supports revising the law to adapt to the evolving needs of the PCG.
Madrona, in response, stated that he is in discussions with the PCG regarding plans to construct a new three-hectare base for the Philippine Coast Guard, including search and rescue operations and educational facilities in Romblon, which would cost P400 million. He also mentioned that he is pursuing new legislation in Congress aimed at streamlining the PCG’s core functions.
