The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources – Special Area for Agricultural Development (BFAR-SAAD) in the MIMAROPA region provided significant livelihood support to two fisherfolk associations in Banton, Romblon, in December 2024.
The beneficiary organizations, Laging Pangalagaan Upang Lalo Pang Unlad Ang Ating Kalikasan (LAPU-LAPU) and Mamayan, Mahalin, at Ingatan ang Ating Kalikasan (MAMING), were equipped with essential tools to enhance their fishing activities and sustainability.
The awarded items are two sets of materials for shallow water fish aggregating devices or Paya, ten sets of bottom-set gill nets, and materials for drift gill nets.
Before distributing these resources, BFAR-SAAD conducted comprehensive preparatory activities, such as profiling, needs assessments, and participatory rural appraisals, to tailor the interventions to the fisherfolk’s specific needs. These steps ensured the initiatives addressed both immediate and long-term challenges.
According to BFAR SAAD MIMAROPA, this initiative not only supports the fisherfolk’s livelihood but also strengthens sustainable fishing practices in Banton, reflecting BFAR-SAAD’s commitment to empowering local communities.
