Volunteers in Barangay Poblacion successfully collected over 900 kilograms of plastic waste during a clean-up drive held today. The activity, organized by the local community, was aimed at protecting the barangay’s mangrove forest.
According to Barangay Kagawad Emil Gerangue, who chairs the Committee on Environment and Ecology, removing these plastic wastes is crucial for safeguarding the mangrove ecosystem, which plays a vital role in protecting the area from natural disasters like floods.
The clean-up drive saw participation from various sectors, including youth, elderly, professionals, and representatives from different government agencies. In addition to the waste collection, volunteers planted 400 mangrove seedlings to help replenish the diminishing mangrove population in the area.
“The purpose of this program is to address the decreasing number of mangrove trees in our town and to add more trees that can protect us from calamities caused by flooding,” Gerangue stated.
The collected plastic waste is expected to be transported to Odiongan for processing and recycling.
