The Department of Science and Technology-MIMAROPA (DOST-MIMAROPA) will hold its Regional Science and Technology Week celebration entitled “Changing Lives Through Science” in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro on October 10-12, 2018.
This three-day celebration is aimed at bringing science and technology (S&T) programs and projects, technological innovations and research and development outputs closer to MIMAROPA.
Anchored on this year’s theme “Innovation for Collective Prosperity,” the technology forums lined up for this year is in consideration of the economic potentials of the region such as salt farming, wood and bamboo-based products, smart agriculture, and other new food technologies like iron-fortified rice, stabilized brown rice.
It will also feature latest science and technology trends and breakthroughs on food safety and wastewater treatment technologies to assist local establishments in the province.
Also, in response to the pressing need for effective technological interventions for disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) as seen in the massive destructions and several casualties brought by Typhoon Josie last July, DOST will launch the transponder technology for early warning systems or hydromet sensors for remote areas in MIMAROPA.
In conjunction with the UP-DREAM Program/Phil-LiDAR 1, they will provide a training- workshop for local DRRM officers to provide necessary and relevant skills in the use of flood hazard maps. This will be held separately at Sikatuna Beach Hotel which will run for three days.
Meanwhile, a bazaar will showcase the assisted Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise’s products through its Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) that will be made available for purchase to the visitors. Exemplary SETUP adopters in MIMAROPA will also be awarded during the event.
There will be informative and immersive exhibits that will highlight the latest technological advances and trends and other programs, services, and projects by DOST-MIMAROPA and other DOST-attached agencies.
On the other hand, a roundtable discussion will be held underlining the consolidation of ideas and efforts to efficiently protect and conserve the critically-endangered Mindoro dwarf buffalo or the locally known tamaraw.
Also, this event will serve as the platform to address the gaps in the research and development ecosystem of State Colleges and Universities (SUCs) in the region.
These activities will be held at the Seasons Hotel and Convention Center.
Concurrent to the aforesaid activities, the Sci-fun Caravan: Travelling Science Centrum specially designed for students and teachers to enhance learning of basic science concepts, processes, and phenomena will take place at San Jose Municipal Gymnasium.
DOST secretary Fortunato de la Peña will grace the event along with other officials of the department and several local government offices.
