The National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI), Romblon State University (RSU), Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources- MIMAROPA Region, and the Local Government Unit of Santa Maria joined forces in a collaborative research agreement recently.
The event was attended by key figures including Hon. Lorilie F. Manito-Fabon, Municipal Mayor of Santa Maria, Dr. Ulysses M. Montojo, Chief of NFRDI-Fisheries Policy and High-Value Fisheries Research and Development Division (FPHRDD), Mr. Roberto R. Abrera, MPA, Chief of BFAR-MIMAROPA-Fisheries Production and Support Services Division (FPSSD), Dr. Lillian C. Garcia, CESO V, DA-NFRDI Executive Director, Dr. Emelyn F. Montoya, RSU-VP for Academic Affairs, Dr. Eddie G. Fetalvero, RSU-VP for Research, Extension, Development and Innovations, and Dr. Joemar Manzo, Director of Romblon State University- Santa Maria Campus.
The collaborative research project titled “Market Assessment and Refinement of Smoked Fish in Romblon” will be implemented by the NFRDI with a budget of Php 1,590,000.00.
The project, funded by the Bureau of Agricultural Research, will run from April 3, 2023, to February 2, 2024.
Its primary objective is to promote the enterprise of smoked fish in the province, by creating additional livelihood opportunities for the local fisherfolk through micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
According to LGU Santa Maria, by engaging in collaborative efforts, the NFRDI, RSU, BFAR-MIMAROPA, and the LGU aspire to support the development of a sustainable and profitable smoked fish industry, contributing to the economic growth of the province and improving the livelihoods of the fisherfolk community.
