The Department of Trade and Industry is warning the public about gadgets being marketed as energy-saving devices, saying they are not certified by the department.
DTI Occidental Mindoro Provincial Director Noel Flores explained during the March 11 episode of “Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas” that these allegedly energy-saving devices are used similarly to an adapter, claiming to reduce the electricity consumption of plugged-in appliances.
“That’s fake news,” Flores stressed, adding that some sellers even show certifications from government offices such as DTI or the Bureau of Fire Protection as proof of legitimacy, but emphasized that these documents are fake.
Similarly, in 2022, the Department of Energy issued a public advisory about the same product, which used the office’s name to promote its effectiveness in an advertisement.
“Please be informed that the video is intentionally spliced and edited to deceive our energy consumers and promote their personal interests,” the DOE said.
The DOE also disproved the effectiveness of the gadget.
If the community and the electric cooperative in your area allow, Flores suggested investing in solar panels to effectively and safely cut electricity costs.
“Saving energy depends on the consumer,” he said.
To help protect the public from fake and defective products, the DTI is intensifying its information campaign through radio programs, training and consumer advocacy. (DSG/PIA MIMAROPA-Occidental Mindoro)
