Romblon’s economy expanded by 7.3% in 2023, a slower growth compared to 2022’s 9.8%, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Romblon. The province’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) increased from PHP 29.02 billion in 2022 to PHP 31.14 billion this year.
The slower growth was attributed to the contraction of the Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing sectors, which declined by 3.2%. The reduction in livestock production due to the African Swine Fever (ASF) and the adverse effects of El Niño significantly impacted the sector’s performance.
PSA Romblon Chief Statistical Specialist Engr. Johnny Solis explained that not only the province of Romblon recorded a negative growth rate in Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing sectors, but also the provinces of Occidental Mindoro and Marinduque which are also both affected by ASF and El Niño.
Meanwhile, in response to these challenges, the provincial government assured continued interventions, such as the distribution of assistance and indemnity checks to those affected by El Niño and ASF.
Despite these setbacks, the Industry and Services sectors drove economic growth, with 10.8% and 9.1% expansions, respectively. The gains were led by construction, accommodation, food services, and financial and insurance activities.
Among the provinces and cities in the MIMAROPA region, Romblon recorded the second-highest GDP growth, following Puerto Princesa City’s 10.6%.
The PSA, through its Provincial Product Accounts (PPA) program, continues to monitor provincial-level economic performance, enabling more localized insights consistent with national and regional data.
Although agriculture faced challenges, Romblon remains on a positive trajectory, supported by steady growth in other key economic sectors. (with reports from Paul Jaysent Fos/PIA Romblon)
