The Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB) in MIMAROPA has announced plans to review the region’s current minimum wage structure.
During the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas held in Calapan City, RTWPB MIMAROPA Secretary Atty. Grace Lyn Pantaleon confirmed that discussions among board members have already taken place regarding the review, although a final date for the start of the process has yet to be determined.
Atty. Pantaleon clarified that the review does not automatically guarantee a wage increase.
“A decision on whether to increase wages will only be made after careful deliberation. A review doesn’t necessarily mean an immediate wage hike,” according to Atty. Pantaleon.
The wage review will involve consultations with labor representatives, employers, and government agencies to ensure a balanced outcome that reflects the economic realities of the region.
For minimum wage earners in Romblon, the news of the wage review is a welcome development. Jexy Gado, a working student in Romblon earning P369 daily, expressed optimism about the potential wage increase, particularly in light of the ongoing rise in living costs in the province.
“With prices of goods going up, especially basic necessities, a higher wage would really help ease the burden of working students like me. It can also help reduce stress. It can also assist with expenses like food, gas, rent, and other school-related costs,” said Gado.
She also noted that it is the right time to raise the minimum wage due to the steady increase in prices.
Based on the latest inflation report from the Philippine Statistics Authority, Romblon recorded a 3.2% inflation rate in August 2024, which is the second-lowest in the MIMAROPA region. The regional average inflation rate stood at 4.1%.
Atty. Pantaleon urges workers and employers across MIMAROPA to actively participate in the wage review process. She encouraged them to visit the official Facebook page of RTWPB MIMAROPA for updates and announcements, emphasizing the importance of their voices being heard during the consultations.
