The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is implementing initiatives to expand the country’s forest cover, with a goal of reforesting three million hectares of land by 2028.
Currently, of the Philippines’ 15 million hectares of designated forest lands, only seven million hectares remain covered with forests. The DENR aims to increase this to at least 10 million hectares through various conservation and rehabilitation programs, including the National Greening Program.
In 2023, the agency began mapping 1.2 million hectares of land to be designated for reforestation efforts in partnership with various people’s organizations. The department plans to reach its three-million-hectare target in the coming years as part of its broader strategy to address deforestation and environmental sustainability.
The DENR also continues to monitor environmental conditions, utilizing satellite imagery to establish a database for tracking land use and conservation efforts. Additionally, programs are being implemented to support communities affected by climate-related environmental changes.
The agency has noted that urbanization and economic development contribute to environmental challenges, including biodiversity loss, pollution, and water security concerns. As part of its long-term approach, the DENR is working with stakeholders to promote sustainable land and forest management.
