A teacher and recognized Community-Driven Development (CDD) champion is encouraging today’s youth to participate in community and government programs as volunteers.
During the Kapit-Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan-Comprehensive and Integrated Delivery of Social Services (KALAHI-CIDSS) Knowledge Exchange Forum in Pasay City, Wenefreda De Jesus emphasized the positive impact that youth involvement in volunteerism can have on community development.
“Their barangay will improve and prosper if there are people who continue to help and do good for their fellowmen,” said De Jesus.
She pointed out that while many young people are distracted by modern technology, becoming active in local government programs, particularly those spearheaded by the Sangguniang Kabataan, can be greatly beneficial.
De Jesus has been recognized by the Department of Social Welfare and Development MIMAROPA for her significant contributions to CDD projects under the KALAHI-CIDSS in Barangay Cabacao, Occidental Mindoro.
As a leader-volunteer, she played a crucial role in completing a water system project that benefited the indigenous Mangyan community in her barangay. Her group also initiated another project focused on improving healthcare services at their Barangay Rural Health Center.
Since the KALAHI-CIDSS program was implemented in Abra De Ilog, over PHP 39 million has been allocated to various CDD projects in the area, benefiting 5,463 households.
De Jesus expressed her gratitude and vowed to continue her volunteer work to further improve her barangay and assist those in greater need.
“I know it’s difficult, but we have to endure. The hardships I experienced due to poverty shouldn’t be felt by the generations after us. If I stop, what will happen to them? What about those who need our help?” De Jesus stated.
