The Diocese of Romblon has issued an appeal to the faithful, urging them to contribute to the upcoming second collection to aid in the reconstruction of the fire-ravaged St. Joseph Cathedral convent in Romblon, Romblon.
In a letter addressed to priests and the community, Bishop Narciso Abellana humbly requested their generosity to assist in rebuilding the convent and restoring the religious artifacts that were tragically damaged by the fire on May 27.
Bishop Abellana conveyed his appeal, stating, “I am appealing for your generosity – a second collection for the month of June (5 Sundays) for this project,” in a letter dated May 31.
The devastating incident occurred in the early morning hours of May 27, 2023, when the rectory or convent of the St. Joseph Cathedral in Romblon, Romblon was engulfed in flames, reducing it to ashes, except for the resilient old stone pillars, the bishop explained.
He expressed the significance of the tragedy, highlighting that restoration plans were already underway before the unfortunate event took place.
“This is indeed a tragedy because the centuries-old structure, which also housed the Parish Office and was declared a cultural heritage site, has been lost to the fire. All the canonical books and other records have been turned to ashes,” Abellana lamented.
He further emphasized the loss of Diocesan antiques originating from various parishes, as well as the temporary museum housed within the rectory. The fire has consumed a significant connection to the diocese’s rich history.
Bishop Abellana also disclosed the proposal to construct a new rectory, pending the decision and conditions set by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).
“While awaiting the NCCA’s verdict, we must plan for the construction of a new rectory,” he explained.
Simultaneously, the bishop acknowledged the ongoing fundraising efforts for the Diocese’s Golden Jubilee activities and programs, urging continued support despite the additional appeal for the convent’s reconstruction.
“I understand that we are also raising funds for the Diocese’s Golden Jubilee activities and program, involving all parishes. However, just as the Cathedral symbolizes the Diocese as its Seat, the rectory holds equal importance,” Abellana added.
The Diocese of Romblon seeks the unwavering support and generosity of the faithful to contribute to the second collection in June, as they strive to restore the St. Joseph Cathedral convent and preserve the spiritual and historical heritage it represents.
