With cases of the 2019 coronavirus (COVID-19) on the rise all over the country, Senator Risa Hontiveros has shared several tips to help Filipino families effectively protect themselves from the onslaught of the feared corona virus.
“Just like many of you, I am worried for my family and the nation now that cases of COVID-19 have been reported all over the country,” Hontiveros said. “However, the best way we can keep our families healthy and safe is by keeping calm and by following internationally-recognized guidelines to avoid getting affected with this disease.”
Hontiveros said that everyone must follow the top tips against COVID-19, led by regularly washing hands especially after going outside, after going to the restroom, or before eating.
“Health experts agree that proper handwashing with soap and water is the best way to kill off viruses and stop their spread. Likewise, people should avoid touching their faces – particularly their eyes, noses or mouths,” she said.
When water is not available, Hontiveros said, people can also use alcohol or hand sanitizers: “It’s a good idea to bring alcohol wherever you go.”
The senator said that people must also practice social distancing and avoid crowded areas and refrain from handshakes, kisses or bodily contact with others. While face masks are not necessary for everyone, Hontiveros said people with coughs, colds, fever and other diseases should wear them, along with immunocompromised people like pregnant women or the elderly.
However, Hontiveros urged people to not hoard protective gear like face masks, alcohol and sanitizers in the market. “Let us have compassion for other people, who would also need these things to protect themselves. Let’s limit our purchases to what we personally need,” she said.
Hontiveros also reminded people to watch their family members or members of their household if they exhibit symptoms of COVID-19 such as dry cough, sore throat or fever. “Coordinate closely with your local health workers, especially if their confirmed cases of COVID-19 in your neighborhood.”
Finally, Hontiveros said that the public should monitor and follow the latest announcements of government agencies and experts in relation to COVID-19. “Listen to our doctors and officials, not to fake news posted in social media,” she said.
“COVID-19 is a serious public health problem. We can only overcome it as a community. Let us unite and take care of each other. We are safe when those around us are safe as well,” Hontiveros concluded.
