The province of Romblon is set to celebrate its 124th Foundation Anniversary and 80th Liberation Anniversary with a series of activities that honor its rich history, culture, and resilience.
A special holiday has been declared in the province on March 16 and 18, according to Republic Act 9642 and Proclamation No. 430, s. 1989, allowing residents to fully participate in the commemorative events.
On Sunday, the event will begin with a Thanksgiving Mass at the Capitol Grounds, followed by a civic parade. The provincial and municipal flags will be hoisted in a symbolic ceremony, and a wreath-laying will take place at the Liberation Marker within the Capitol Grounds to honor the sacrifices of those who fought for the province’s freedom.
The day’s events will also feature the opening of the Agri-Fair, which will showcase local agricultural products and innovations.
On Tuesday, another wreath-laying ceremony will be held at the Liberation Marker in Barangay Sawang, commemorating the historic events that led to Romblon’s liberation during World War II.
During World War II, Romblon, like many parts of the Philippines, was occupied by Japanese forces. The province saw its share of conflicts as Filipino guerrilla fighters, supported by allied forces, resisted the occupation.
One of the most notable military actions in the area was the liberation campaign in early 1945, when United States and Filipino forces, along with local guerrilla fighters, launched operations to reclaim Romblon from Japanese control. The strategic location of Romblon’s islands made them valuable for both naval and ground operations.
