Three detour bridges in the remote town of Busuanga in Palawan province have been washed out and destroyed by persistent heavy rains that began last week.
Washed out were the Sto. Niño Bridge, Bintuan Bridge and Balugo Bridge – all in the northern part of Busuanga, the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (MDRRMO) said Friday.
Officer of the MDRRMO, Gudy Aguilar said town residents now have to take the long route to get to their destinations.
She said heavy rains and strong winds have also prevented fishermen from going out to sea, raising fears that Busuanga might run out of food if the bad weather continues.
Aguilar said her office has already readied food packs but they have also reported the matter to the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (PDRRMO) for the provision of more food and relief goods.
Busuanga covers the western one-third of Busuanga Island and Calauit Island, both of which are part of the Calamian Islands, lying between Mindoro and Palawan.
According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 21,358 people.
The Busuanga town center, Salvacion, is approximately 50 km. from the poblacion of its neighboring municipality of Coron. (PNA)
