The Odiongan HIV/AIDS Council has reported a slight increase in confirmed acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) cases in the municipality of Odiongan, urging the public to remain vigilant and practice preventive measures.
According to data posted by the Odiongan Public Information Office, 39 confirmed AIDS/HIV cases were recorded in Odiongan as of December 2024, an increase from 37 cases in June 2024. Province-wide, Romblon also saw a rise in AIDS/HIV cases. In June 2024, there were 151 confirmed cases, which increased to 158 cases by December 2024, indicating a continuous spread of the virus.
Despite this, health officials stress that AIDS is preventable and encourage the public to follow the ABCDE approach to prevention, which includes abstaining from risky behaviors, being faithful to one partner, consistently using condoms, avoiding the use of injectable drugs, and prioritizing education and early testing.
The Odiongan Rural Health Unit (RHU) and Odiongan HIV/AIDS Council continue their efforts to educate the public, promote awareness, and provide free testing services to help prevent the spread of HIV in the community.
Health officials also emphasize the importance of supporting People Living with HIV (PLHIV). While AIDS/HIV remains a serious health concern, treatment options are available that allow PLHIV to lead longer, healthier lives while reducing the risk of transmission.
The local government urges residents to get tested, seek medical advice, and spread awareness to help curb the rise of AIDS/HIV cases in Odiongan and the entire province of Romblon.
