DOST-MIMAROPA through the Provincial S&T Office in Romblon, in collaboration with experts from the University of the Philippines Diliman (UP Diliman) and the Provincial Government of Romblon, facilitated an environmental scanning as part of the Romblon Marble Industry Road Mapping Project.
The environmental scan, conducted through a hybrid event, brings together key industry leaders, the academe, and government stakeholders to discuss critical issues and opportunities in the local marble industry. The session utilized the STEEP analytical framework to identify and validate trends and problems in significant areas such as human resources, machinery, research and innovation, market potential, logistics, environmental sustainability, and political and regulatory support.
Furthermore, the participants shared their perspectives on the social, technological, economic, environmental, and political aspects impacting the industry, with a particular emphasis on the role of science, technology, and innovation (STI) in transforming its future.
The environmental scan highlighted several key challenges, including an aging workforce, slow adoption of modern technologies, and competition from cheaper imports. However, it also identified opportunities in sustainable practices, government support, and market expansion.
The marble industry road mapping project aims to explore the current trends, opportunities for growth, and threats to the industry’s sustainability, offering a roadmap for its future development. The environmental scan is a vital step toward establishing a comprehensive and resilient plan for the long-term growth of Romblon’s marble industry. (PR)
