Ten individuals remain missing as personnel from the Philippine Coast Guard and members of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council of San Jose continue their search and rescue operations. The individuals were passengers of MBCA Urimy and another smaller, unnamed boat, both of which sank near San Jose, Romblon.
According to Major Francis Rey Manito of the San Jose Municipal Police Station, the group of 20 people was traveling from Boracay Island to Caluya, Antique, when their boats sank during the journey on August 26.
So far, ten of the twenty passengers have been rescued by the combined efforts of the San Jose MPS, Boracay Coast Guard, San Jose Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, and Boracay PNP.
Survivors recounted that they left Boracay early in the morning on Monday, but their boat sank around 7 a.m. yesterday.
The smaller boat was the first to capsize, and while MBCA Urimy was conducting a rescue operation, it too was overturned by strong waves. Authorities only learned about the incident after two of the survivors washed ashore in San Jose.
The rescue operations by authorities are ongoing.
