Organizers of the Palarong Pambansa 2024 have assured the public that contingency plans are in place to ensure the games proceed smoothly despite forecasts of two to three typhoons entering the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) this month.
Adolf Aguilar, Assistant School Division Superintendent of Cebu City, emphasized that the games will continue as scheduled, drawing confidence from the organizers’ experience handling similar weather challenges during last year’s event in Marikina City.
“We have outlined measures in case heavy rains and flooding occur at sports event venues,” Aguilar stated.
Aguilar also mentioned that tournament managers have the discretion to pause the games until temperatures are safe in extreme heat. The organizers will monitor the heat index closely and implement mandatory timeouts if needed to protect the athletes’ well-being.
Meanwhile, Cebu City Police are on full alert as delegates from across the country arrive for the opening ceremony on July 9. Cebu City Police Chief Col. Ireneo Dalogdog emphasized the efforts to ensure the safety and security of the 12,000 delegates attending the event.
“Your police is doing its best to ensure the safety and security of the 12,000 delegates who will be in Cebu City for the Palaro. We are asking the Cebuanos to support your police in their job to make this national event a success,” Dalogdog said to the Philippine News Agency.
To facilitate a smooth entry at the Cebu City Sports Center, where the main events will be held from July 9 to 16, the local police will enforce a “no-big-backpack” policy. This measure aims to enhance security and ensure a hassle-free experience for all attendees.
