Seven areas in Luzon are now placed under public storm warning signals as the low pressure area located east of Borongan City has developed into a tropical depression and was locally named ‘Ambo’, the first tropical cyclone to affect the country this year, according to the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
In an interview, PAGASA weather forecaster Aldczar Aurelio said as of 11:30 a.m., ‘Ambo’ was spotted some 182 km East of Virac, Catanduanes packed with maximum sustained winds of 45 kph near the center and it is forecast to move west northwest at 19 kph.
Maintaining its speed and movement, ‘Ambo’ is expected to make landfall at Aurora province on Monday and will weaken after making landfall.
Meanwhile, public storm warning signal no. 1 (30-60 kph winds expected in 36 hours) is hoisted over the provinces of Catanduanes, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Northern Quezon including Polillo Islands, Aurora and Quirino.
These areas will experience occassional rains and occasional gusty winds.
The estimated rainfall amount is from 2.5 – 10 mm per hour (moderate-heavy) within the 200 km diameter of the Tropical Depression.
Likewise, occasional moderate to heavy rains is expected over Central Luzon, CALABARZON and Bicol Region beginning on Sunday.
‘Ambo’ is expected to be at 80 km east of Baler, Aurora by Monday morning.
By Tuesday morning, it is forecast to be at 220 km, west of Laoag City and by Wednesday morning, it is expected to be at 660 km, northwest of Laoag City or 700 km, west of Basco, Batanes.
However, the state weather bureau has not issued gale warning which means it is safe for fisherfolks to venture into the seas. (PNA)
