The southwest monsoon “habagat” season has ended and the country can expect cooler northeast monsoon “amihan” season in the coming days, the weather bureau announced.
In a statement dated Oct. 4, Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) Administrator Vicente Malano said there has been a significant weakening of the southwest monsoon over the past few days.
“With this development, the southwest monsoon season has ended,” he said.
Malano said the strengthening of high-pressure systems over the Asian continents suggests the gradual transition of the season.
“This pattern will lead to the beginning of the ‘amihan’ season in the coming days,” he added.
The “habagat” season is usually from June to September. It is often characterized by hot and humid weather and frequent rainfall.
