If you think that you have seen already the best of Philippine islands, wait until you visit the Island of Sibale in Romblon where you can experience the Bagulayag.
Bagulayag is a hidden gem in the island municipality of Concepcion (also known as Sibale), province of Romblon, it is where you can witness the so-called Batanes of Sibale. The cliffside hills are what keeps the residents and tourists coming, because it looks like a little version of those in Batanes.
Aside from its resemblance with Batanes, tourists also crave for the white sand beaches of Sibale. Hence, Sibale is known for snorkeling and swimming activities.
Sibale is officially part of Romblon but it’s geographic location is closer to the province of Mindoro.
How to go to Sibale Island.
If from Manila, ride a bus going to Batangas City Port. There are bus terminals of DLTB, Jac Liner and Jam Liner in Cubao and Buendia. Bus fare costs Php170.
From Batangas Port, you can choose either Roro vessels such as Montenegro Lines and Fast Cat or those fast craft vessels like the SuperCat and OceanJet, going to Calapan City, Or. Mindoro.
Roro fare ranges from Php190-200 while fast craft fare is Php 250 and above.
Upon arrival at Calapan Port, look for UVExpress terminal where you can ride a van to Pinamalayan Port for Php140 per person.
At Pinamalayan Port, you have to take a passenger boat trip to Sibale Island.
The boat ride going to Sibale is definitely fun. It takes 2-3 hours to get there. During rainy season, the ride is bumpy because of the big and crazy waves. So, expect to get wet and it is better to keep your things in a waterproof bag or plastic when travelling during those periods. My friendly advise, visit the place from March to May to experience good weather.
Just take note that trip to the island is only once a day and it leaves at exactly 11 o'clock in the morning. Boat fare is Php150.
Trekking to Bagulayag
From the port of Sibale, two options can be chosen. You can take a habal-habal going to the jump off or ride a small motor banca to the nearest shore. Upon reaching to this jump off or shore, another challenge you have to face is trekking. It takes 20-30 minutes of trekking to finally witness the “Batanes of Sibale”.
No guide is required in the island. On your way up, the stunning beauty of Bagulayag will gently show itself. There’s nothing you can do but be in awe with the nature’s beauty.

After all the things you endured, you finally witness the “Batanes of Sibale” which will not only take your breath away, but might as well steal your heart.
Up there, you better be ready because most of the times, you will be greeted with the strong breeze.
Some Tips when visiting Sibale Island:
- Bring enough cash, because there are no ATM (Automated Teller Machine) around the island.
- Take nothing but photos, and leave nothing but footprints.
- It is better and cheaper to visit Sibale Island by a group.
- Signal is good, you can still use your mobile phone, pocket WiFi and mobile data.
- Sibale Island is a perfect destination for summer.
- Protect yourself from the heat. Bring sunblock, sunglasses, hat, and water, to keep you hydrated.
- Wear slippers or splasher shoes
Affordable accommodations are available in the island. These accommodations offer good hospitality, have cosy rooms and friendly owners and care takers. Both accommodations offer guests with a very relaxing and beautiful sea view from the balcony. You can also ask local residents for a free accommodation if you have tight budget.
