The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) in the MIMAROPA region is amplifying its efforts to promote and protect children’s rights, a commitment emphasized by Maria Susana Sagabaen of DSWD MIMAROPA during a recent Kapihan sa PIA Romblon discussion.
She noted that while cases of child maltreatment have reportedly decreased, the DSWD remains vigilant, ensuring that every child is safe from harm.
“While we are pleased to see a decrease in reported cases, we cannot fully rely on the data alone as a reflection of the true picture across our region. A community reporting zero cases does not necessarily mean that all is well; some incidents may simply go unreported,” Sagabaen said.
In line with the National Children’s Month celebrations, the Kapihan forum focused on increasing public awareness of children’s rights and available protections against abuse.
Sagabaen pointed out that all barangays in MIMAROPA have now received the necessary training to address and respond to reports involving child and women’s welfare, providing safe spaces for victims to report incidents without fear of stigma or backlash.
The DSWD encourages victims to approach local authorities, whether at the barangay, municipal level, DSWD offices, or the Philippine National Police, to report any mistreatment.
In Odiongan, Mae April Joy Agaloos-Coros from the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office confirmed that all cases brought to their office over the past year have been filed in court, ensuring justice for affected children. To support children who have experienced trauma, LGU Odiongan also offers psychosocial assistance aimed at helping them heal and move forward in a safe, supportive environment.
Meanwhile, Sagabaen announced that the DSWD is conducting weekly online forums throughout November to educate the public on laws protecting children. This series aims to deepen understanding of children’s rights and responsibilities within families and communities.
Additionally, DSWD MIMAROPA will implement special programs across Palawan, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, and Romblon as part of the ongoing Children’s Month activities.
