The Philippine Information Agency (PIA) Romblon gathered communication practitioners and participants from various sectors during the Romblon Communication Network Conference, Training, and Oath-Taking Ceremony held in Rizal, Odiongan, Romblon to enhance their knowledge and skills in modern broadcasting and public information dissemination.
One of the highlights of the activity was a lecture on “Radio Broadcasting in the Modern Era” delivered by Voltaire N. Dequina, Information Center Manager of PIA Occidental Mindoro.
During his presentation, Dequina discussed the importance of responsible broadcasting, accurate news reporting, and effective communication in the evolving media environment.
He emphasized that broadcasters must fully understand the information they deliver before presenting it to the public and highlighted the importance of clear and direct communication, particularly in radio news delivery.
The discussion covered topics such as the continuing role of radio in the digital age, news program management, writing for broadcast, talk show hosting, live field reporting, crisis and disaster broadcasting, radio and social media convergence, and the public service functions of broadcasters.
The workshop component of the conference featured group presentations on community-centered topics, including public concerns, local development initiatives, and information campaigns relevant to communities in Romblon.
Participants developed and presented communication materials focusing on public awareness, community participation, disaster preparedness, education, tourism promotion, and the responsible use of social media platforms.
According to Paul Jaysent Fos, Information Center Manager of PIA Romblon, the activity aimed to strengthen the capabilities of communication practitioners and information officers in delivering accurate, timely, and relevant information to the public.
“Through this conference and training, we hope to equip our communication partners with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively communicate government programs, community initiatives, and public service information while upholding the principles of responsible media practice,” Fos said.
He added that strengthening the communication network in the province is essential in promoting informed and empowered communities, especially during emergencies and disaster situations.
The conference also included the oath-taking ceremony of members of the Romblon Communication Network and served as a venue for information officers, broadcasters, and communication practitioners to exchange knowledge and experiences related to public information work.
The activity forms part of PIA Romblon’s continuing efforts to strengthen information dissemination and communication initiatives in local communities through training, collaboration, and capacity-building programs.
