The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) announced that more than 14 million Filipinos have successfully registered their Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards under Republic Act No. 11934 or the SIM Card Registration Act.
In a press briefing on Friday, NTC Officer-in-Charge Ella Blanca Lopez presented the tally of registrants per Public Telecommunication Entity (PTE) as of January 4, 2023.
Smart Communications Inc. had the greatest number of registrants with 6,713,632, followed by Globe Telecom, Inc. at 6,135,596 and DITO Telecommunity Corp. at 1,200,897.
Under the SIM Card Registration Act, PTEs are mandated to establish their own registration platforms.
The law also requires all existing and new subscribers to register their SIM cards until April 26.
After the stated deadline, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) is allowed to extend the registration period for another 120 days.
End-users who fail to comply with the requirements for registration within the period prescribed shall result in the automatic deactivation of the SIM.
Meanwhile, NTC Regulation Branch Director Engr. Imelda Walcein reiterated that the commission has already formed an NTC Task Force through Office Order No. 112-12-2022 that will ensure the smooth implementation of the law and its implementing rules and regulations (IRR) on a nationwide scale.
NTC Deputy Commissioner Jon Paulo V. Salvahan added that the commission is also in coordination with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), and other government agencies to facilitate SIM cards registration in remote areas with limited telecommunications and internet access.
NTC reassured mobile phone subscribers that there is nothing to fear as all the data and information sent to the service providers are safe and secure in accordance with RA No. 10173, otherwise known as the Data Privacy Act of 2012.
