The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Mimaropa, on Tuesday, March 19, handed over a new Mobile Command and Control Vehicle (MoCCoV) to the Provincial Government of Romblon, aiming to enhance its disaster response capabilities. DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. and Governor Jose Riano were present at the event held in Romblon, Romblon.
The MoCCoV will be operated by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction & Management Office (PDRRMO).
Data presented by the DOST said that 131 out of 218 areas in the province are at risk of floods while 50% of land areas are highly prone to landslides. MoCCoV will enable the PDRRMO to efficiently monitor response activities following the said disasters, thanks to advanced technology in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management.
Equipped with a weather monitoring station, a rescue quadcopter drone, global satellite communication and surveillance equipment, as well as rescue and medical gear, the MoCCoV boasts a comprehensive range of features.
Additionally, it includes a portable boat for rescue operations, a conference room, and a mobile command center where emergency responders can strategize their next moves and assist affected communities. Moreover, power outages will not disrupt rescue operations, as the MoCCoV is equipped with solar and wind power supply capabilities to ensure continuous operations.
Solidum said that Romblon is the first province in the Mimaropa region to receive such advanced technology from the Department.
“We are happy to turn over this technology made by a Filipino for a Filipino. This technology will give big changes in the level of disaster risk reduction and management in the community,” according to Solidum.
He emphasized the importance of such technology for island provinces, particularly in the event of a major disaster that could render them isolated.
The MoCCoV, invented by Filipino innovator Mr. Dennis Abella, has also been deployed in Central Luzon and the National Capital Region, further underscoring its effectiveness and versatility in disaster response efforts.
