The Department of Agriculture – Mimaropa under Corn and Cassava program, in partnership with San Miguel Food Corporation and this Municipality’s Agriculture Office conducted a Technical briefing on Corn and Cassava production recently in Banton.
The said briefing was participated by corn and cassava farmers in the island, together with the officials of the local government units and from the private sectors.
According to Garry Fano, officer in charge of the Municipal Agriculture Office, the objective of the briefing is to encourage the participants to plant more corn and cassava, and to train them on the proper way of farming.
He also encourages the farmers to process products from corn and cassava for additional value, instead of selling raw products.
Meanwhile, speakers from the Department of Agriculture – Mimaropa talked during the event on how to increase farmer’s income from corn and cassava, and lectures such as seed selection, land preparation, planting, fertilizer application, and weed and water management.
The said briefing also become an eye-opening to the farmers because through this, they learned of the other uses of cassava: Livestock feed, sweetener, glue, paper and plywood manufacturing.
