At least nine individuals are currently receiving treatment at Don Modesto Formilleza Sr. Memorial Hospital in Looc, Romblon after a jeepney they were riding overturned on Tuesday afternoon.
The jeepney, carrying 12 passengers including the driver and conductors, met the accident in Sitio Cogon, Barangay Limon Norte, Looc.
According to Dr. Renato Menrige, Chief of the Don Modesto Formilleza Sr. Memorial Hospital, hospital staff, doctors, and RHU Looc health personnel worked together to provide immediate medical attention to the victims.
Three of the patients are expected to be transferred to the Romblon Provincial Hospital for more intensive treatment, while six others sustained non-serious injuries.
“The remaining passengers suffered injuries to the head, cheeks, arms, and legs. They were treated at DMFSMH, with two admitted to the hospital and others discharged after receiving care and prescriptions,” Dr. Menrege added.
According to the jeep driver, Jaime Mangao, 84, the vehicle experienced brake failure while traveling along the Odiongan to Looc road prior to the incident.
“Despite the brake failure, the driver continued until reaching a curved section of the road, where he decided to deliberately crash the jeepney to prevent it from descending further onto a steeper, winding road,” according to police report from Looc Municipal Police Station.
The driver now faces charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple serious physical injuries.
