The Department of Agriculture – Special Area for Agricultural Development (DA-SAAD) MIMAROPA has initiated a poultry project aimed at empowering and enhancing the income of some farmers in Alcantara, Romblon. The San Isidro Livestock and Poultry Producers Association, comprising 25 members, receives equipment through the Improved Free-range Chicken Production Project worth Php 119,325.
The project inputs included 129 free-range chickens, veterinary medicines, and one incubator unit.
Before receiving the project, the members underwent training on free-range chicken production, ensuring they possessed the necessary skills for proper care and good practices conducive to the chickens’ well-being in their natural habitat.
As a community effort, group member Rufina Mercano generously offered her 800 sqm lot for the construction of their communal poultry house, adhering to strict sanitation measures.
The group, envisioning Tablas Island and the entire community as potential markets, planned to turn their locally sourced, high-quality poultry products into a profitable venture.
Identified through a beneficiary needs assessment conducted by program implementers, free-range chicken farming emerged as the ideal project for the group. With their experience in poultry raising and a suitable area for the venture, the group anticipates significant profits from selling both meat and eggs in 2024.
