Three (3) bakeries in Oriental Mindoro have signed a technology licensing agreement (TLA) to adopt and start the mass production of the Enhanced Nutribun (E-nutribun) technology of the DOST- Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI).
DOST-MIMAROPA administered the signing of the TLA which was held separately last January 14, 2023 between DOST-FNRI and the new technology adopters— City Cakes and Café of City College of Calapan which operates under the local government of Calapan City, Olympia’s Bakery also located at Calapan City, and GMC Bakery in the municipality of Pinamalayan. The two licensees from Calapan City were endorsed by the City Nutrition Office of the City Government of Calapan while GMC Bakery is the first licensee of the e-nutribun technology from Pinamalayan and from the entire 2nd district of Oriental Mindoro.
In preparation for commercial production of the technology, the three bakeries, who were among the 17 new adopters of the technology across the country, took part in a three-day nationwide simultaneous Virtual Technology Transfer Training on the Production of the developed Enhanced Nutribun Squash Variant. The Oriental Mindoro leg of the activity, facilitated by DOST-MIMAROPA through its Provincial S&T Office, was conducted last January 20, 23, and 24.
In the first day of the activity, the participants were oriented about the importance of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Food Safety to avoid food contamination and ensure food safety during the production process. The last two days were allotted for hands-on training on the production of the enhanced nutribun technology-squash variant.
City Cakes and Café was represented by a total of 13 students of the Alternative Learning System (ALS) program and six skilled hotel and restaurant management instructors of the City College of Calapan. The college administration is planning to tap these students to get involved in the production and commercialization of the e-nutribun to give them alternative livelihood.
DOST-FNRI reminded the newly-trained technology adopters to strictly comply with the standard process to maintain the quality of e-nutribun to be offered to the consuming public.
Provincial S&T Director of Oriental Mindoro, Mr. Jesse, Pine added that the e-nutribun offers a wide range of opportunities for the adopters to include various potential market including DepEd, DSWD, and the general public. He also shared insights on how best to maintain the quality of the nutritious product.
