San Agustin Mayor Denon Madrona emphasized the power of unity and cooperation in shaping Romblon’s history and progress on Sunday, March 16, during the 124th Founding Anniversary and 80th Victory Day commemorations.
Speaking as the guest of honor, the three-termer Mayor of San Agustin reflected on how the province’s ancestors fought for freedom and how their spirit of unity remains a guiding force for Romblon’s growth today.
“Ang kalayaan natin ay dahil sa pagkakaisa ng ating mga ninuno sa pakikipag-away, sa pagplano, para magkaroon po sila ng tinatawag natin ngayon na identity,” he said.
He pointed out that while Romblon is an archipelagic province, separated by bodies of water, its people have never been divided on purpose.
“Alam niyo naman po na ang ating probinsya ay hiwa-hiwalay dahil yan ang ating geolocation, and yet, that challenge didn’t hinder us from talking. Lahat po tayo ay nagsama-sama para maipakita natin ang pagkakaisa,” Madrona added.
Drawing a parallel between the past and present, Madrona emphasized that just as unity led to victory in the past, it is also the key to Romblon’s progress today. He credited the strong collaboration among local leaders in bringing development and opportunities to the province.
The commemoration at the Provincial Capitol Grounds featured a Thanksgiving Mass, a civic parade, a flag-raising ceremony, and a wreath-laying tribute at the Liberation Marker to honor the heroes of World War II. The event also marked the opening of the Agri-Fair, showcasing Romblon’s local produce and livelihood innovations.
On Tuesday, March 18, another wreath-laying ceremony will be held at the Liberation Marker in Barangay Sawang.
