The Department of Science and Technology in the MIMAROPA region through its Provincial Science and Development Office in Romblon is set to implement its Smart and Sustainable Communities Program (SSCP) in the towns of Odiongan and Romblon.
Zenchin Geri Pormento, Supervising Science Research Specialist of DOST Romblon, said during the recent Kapihan sa PIA Romblon that DOST will have a trial run of a DOST-funded e-trike developed by Cagayan State University.
“I-showcase siya na parang R&D output sa Romblon, Romblon. Hopefully this first quarter [of 2025] ay dumating na. Isang unit lang ‘yung una nating i-showcase,” according to Pormento.
Along with this, DOST will also deploy CharM, a fast-charging system for electric vehicles.
The technology provides an alternative solution for conventional charging that takes up to 4-6 hours to get a battery fully charged. With CharM, fully charging an e-vehicle battery can be done in 30 minutes.
Pormento said that the charging station will be available for other models of electric vehicles, not only e-trikes that they funded to be developed.
E-Trike Booking System in Odiongan
DOST MIMAROPA is also set to implement the same program in the town of Odiongan this year, wherein they are set to develop a DOST-funded tricycle booking system for the Tricycle Operators and Driver’s Association.
Pormento said that they are now in talks with the local government unit of Odiongan and with Romblon State University for the feasibility study and the development of the mobile application.
The new technology aims to enhance the commuting experience by providing a more convenient and efficient means of transportation.
The tricycle booking system will streamline operations for tricycle drivers, allowing them to manage ride requests effectively while reducing waiting times for passengers. With the implementation of e-trikes and fast-charging stations, the community can expect a more sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation option that lowers costs and promotes cleaner air.
