The Philippine government extended different aids to farmers, fisherfolk, and families affected by El Niño in Romblon on Thursday despite the bad weather experienced in the province.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. was scheduled to lead the distribution program at Romblon State University, Odiongan, Romblon however, heavy rains and flooding in the area forced him to alter his plans and head to Palawan instead, where a similar event was taking place.
Despite his absence, the program proceeded, led by DILG Secretary Benjamin Abalos, DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian, and DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr.
Data from various national government agencies show that approximately PhP162 million in financial assistance, services, loans, and subsidies were distributed, with a particular focus on the towns of Odiongan and San Andres, both declared in a state of calamity earlier this year due to El Niño.
Of the total amount, PhP3 million came from the Department of Agriculture (DA) for its African Swine Fever indemnification and PhP1.039 million from the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) for the Operation and Maintenance Subsidy for irrigators associations (IAs).
The government will construct PhP26 million worth of irrigation systems in Danao Sur, Dubduban, Gabawan, and Taboboan-Tulay. A cheque worth PhP10 million will be given under the Survival and Recovery Loan Program of the Agricultural Credit Policy Council.
The Agri-Negosyo Loan Program offered PhP5 million to farmers, while the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) will provide PhP774,537 in financial assistance under its Integrated Livelihood Program.
Additionally, the Office of the President extended PhP16.64 million in financial aid to local government units in Romblon.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) also extended PhP10,000 each to the beneficiaries in Romblon, totaling PhP100 million in financial assistance.
The DA provided 120 sacks of yellow corn seed, approximately 360 bottles of organic foliar fertilizer, fertilizer discount vouchers, farming equipment, and other forms of assistance.
The Bureau of Soils and Water Management donated a Composting Facility for Biodegradable Waste, while the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) distributed 2,200 sacks of Agricultural Grade Salt Fertilizers.
The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) prepared 45 starter tool kits and conducted the Special Training for Employment Program.
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) distributed two induction cookers, 28 gill nets, three payaos, three food processing equipment, boat repair materials, and three fiberglass-reinforced boats.
