Fake news can erode public trust in government, the head of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) said on Monday.
During PIA’s first virtual flag ceremony of the year, Director General Ramon Cualoping III called on the Agency’s information officers to sustain the development communication they have been providing the public for the last 35 years.
“Complaints and distrusts in government begin at the spread of fake news, the public must not only be informed, they should understand the policies and programs of government”, DG Cualoping said.
Among the government programs that the public should comprehend thoroughly are the vaccine roll-out, war on the drugs, End Local Communist Armed Conflict and the Balik Probinsya, Bagong Pagasa.
Meanwhile, the Director General urged PIA colleagues to join the nation in celebrating the 500th anniversary of Battle of Mactan on April 27, where local chieftain Lapu-lapu and his men triumphed over circumnavigator Ferdinand Magellan and his Spanish crew.
Furthermore, DG Cualoping said there are many things to look forward to this year such as the new PIA building in Region 2 as well as those to be constructed in Baguio and Zamboanga. (Lyndon Plantilla/PIA-Mimaropa)
