One of the first questions to ask when a Christian starts dating someone is, “Do they genuinely follow Christ?”
And the usual answer? “They believe in God naman.”
Okay, but believing that God exists and actually building your life around Him are two very different things.
Someone can believe in God without genuinely wanting to know Him, obey His Word, or grow in their faith. And if your relationship pulls you away from God instead of helping you grow closer to Him, that’s something worth taking seriously.
Imagine constantly choosing between your relationship and your convictions.
You want to attend church, but they’d rather stay home. You want to honor God with your boundaries, but they keep pressuring you to compromise. You want to grow spiritually, but you always feel like you have to drag them along.
At some point, you have to ask yourself: “Are we actually growing together, or am I slowly compromising just to keep this relationship?”
And no, this isn’t about finding someone perfect. We’re all works in progress. It’s about finding someone who genuinely wants to grow in their relationship with God, not someone who merely tolerates your faith as an extra feature of your life.
In 2 Corinthians 6:14, Paul reminds believers not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers. While the passage addresses a broader principle of spiritual partnership, it reminds us that our deepest convictions and direction in life matter when choosing whom to build a future with.
Because dating isn’t just about kilig, matching profile pictures, and good morning messages. Cute, yes. But can you pray together? Can you encourage each other to obey God? Can you respect each other’s boundaries even when it’s difficult? Can you build a home where faith is practiced, not just mentioned?
And let’s be real: chemistry is great, but it cannot replace character. Butterflies are cute, but they are not spiritual discernment. HAHAHA.
So don’t rush into a relationship just because someone likes you, gives you attention, or says they believe in God. Look at their actions, their values, and the direction they’re choosing for their life.
Don’t just look for someone who says they believe in God. Look for someone whose life reflects a genuine desire to walk with Him.
Wait for a relationship where you can grow in love without shrinking your faith. Someone who respects your convictions, honors your boundaries, and encourages you to become more like Christ.
Because the goal isn’t simply to find someone to hold your hand.
It’s to find someone whose direction in life aligns with the God you’re choosing to follow together.
Kilig is a bonus. Christ-centered is the standard. 🤍
