The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has reassured the public that fish caught around the area where the “M/BCA URIMY” pump boat recently capsized near Romblon and Antique.
The tragic incident, which occurred near Carabao and Tablas Islands, Romblon and Antique has so far led to the recovery of three bodies in the waters near Looc. BFAR extended its deepest sympathies to the families of the victims.
In response to concerns about potential contamination, BFAR quickly conducted an ocular inspection and market denial of fish samples from the affected area. The inspection revealed that no contaminants were present in the fish, and all samples were well below the set food safety standards. Further checks at entry points also confirmed the absence of any oil spill contamination.
With these findings, BFAR assured the public that fish caught and landed in Romblon is safe for human consumption. The agency also encouraged local fisherfolk to resume their activities while adhering to fisheries laws and regulations.
To maintain high food safety standards, BFAR continues to work closely with local government units (LGUs) in Romblon, conducting regular fish quality checks to ensure that the seafood sold and consumed in the province meets all safety requirements.
