A cybercrime advocacy group has urged the administration of Romblon State University to allocate more resources to bolster cybersecurity following a recent attack on their local server.
According to reports, the Philippine Computer Emergency Response Team (PH CERT) emphasized the need for RSU to establish permanent cybersecurity departments staffed with well-trained and equipped personnel.
PH CERT president Lito Averia emphasized the importance of institutions investing more resources in cybersecurity, especially those that store large volumes of sensitive data. Averia stressed that it is insufficient to merely have personnel who can detect and repel cyber-attacks; organizations must also establish incident response teams capable of swiftly mitigating damage in the event of a successful breach.
“Besides acquiring better cybersecurity tools and hiring highly-trained IT personnel, institutions must also adopt policies that hold individuals accountable for negligence in cyber hygiene or for actions that increase the organization’s vulnerability to cybercriminals,” Averia told the Philippine News Agency.
PH CERT, composed of cybersecurity professionals from various organizations, provides guidance to lawmakers in drafting cybersecurity and data privacy legislation.
