Amidst the surge in rabies cases attributed to stray dogs in Romblon province, totaling 56 confirmed cases since 2022, the Romblon Provincial Veterinary Office is pushing for the enforcement of dog registration and tagging by local government units (LGUs), as mandated by the Anti-Rabies Act of 2007.
Section 7 of the law mandates LGUs to ensure that all dogs are properly immunized, registered and issued a corresponding dog tag for identification.
Michelle Famaran, Rabies Focal Person of the Provincial Veterinary Office, emphasized the importance of enforcing this law to address the issue. However, she noted that compliance has been lacking due to the perceived lack of enforcement.
Famaran emphasized that the implementation of dog registration and tagging could also reduce accidents caused by stray dogs.
Despite efforts to engage barangay captains, Famaran acknowledged resistance to the initiative. She expressed readiness to assist barangay officials in addressing concerns and facilitating implementation.
These insights were shared during the Kapihan sa PIA Romblon held last April 17 in Odiongan.
