DTI: TRAIN Law has minimal impact on prices of Basic, Prime Goods

Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon M. Lopez allayed the fears of Filipino consumers on the impact of the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) Act, the first package of the Comprehensive Tax Reform Program (CTRP) under President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s administration.

“While TRAIN is perceived to possibly increase the prices of products of basic necessities and prime commodities (BNPC) in the market, DTI’s initial assessment of applying the excise tax shows only minimal impact on the prices of basic and prime goods,” Trade Secretary Lopez said.

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said the excise tax on petroleum products and tax on sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) as provided for under the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion (TRAIN) Act should not yet impact on prices of fuel and sweetened beverages.

In a text message Wednesday, DTI Secretary Ramon Lopez told reporters that current supplies of petroleum products and sugar-sweetened beverages are still from the period before the new tax law took effect.

DFA starts issuing passports with 10-year validity

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Wednesday announced that issuance of passports with 10-year validity starts January 3.

"Since January 1 and 2 were holidays, passport applications made starting today, January 3, shall be 10-year valid, provided the applicant is not a minor," said Director Geronimo Suliguin, officer in charge for DFA-Office of Public Diplomacy.

Preparations for 2018 barangay, SK polls on time: Comelec exec

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Wednesday assured preparations for the May 2018 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections are on time.

“We’ve actually started preparing for barangay last year...We just continue our preparations... But there’s already a template how we should do things and we are still on time,” Comelec Commissioner Luie Guia said.
