The Department of Health (DOH) assured on Monday that it is doing close monitoring and testing of travelers from endemic countries who are symptomatic or indicating signs of Zika virus infection.

The assurance was made as part of DOH's enhancing of its alertness level as an increase in the number of Zika infection cases in neighboring Singapore has been noted.

Health Secretary Dr. Paulyn Jean B. Rosell-Ubial said that part of the monitoring includes the country’s ports of entry "to make sure that the virus will not get into our shores or possible spread will be controlled ahead."

Media nominated as co-chair of TF Media killings - Andanar

Negotiations are ongoing with the Department of Justice (DOJ) to give Philippine media representation in the Task Force (TF) on Media Killings.

This developed after series of consultations were conducted last week by Secretary Martin Andanar of the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) with various media organisations, including the National Press Club (NPC).

“At pinag-usapan natin kung ano ‘yung mga dapat gawin, kung ano ‘yung mga dapat i-negotiate natin,” said Andanar. The DOJ chairs the TF on Media Killings.

Ceasefire to bring development projects to countryside much faster

With an indefinite ceasefire now in effect between the military and rebels, Eastern Mindanao Command (EMC) head Lt. Gen. Leonardo Guerrero said peace and development projects of the government in the countryside will be able to proceed much faster.

"Now that a ceasefire with the CPP-NPA-NDF (Communist Party of the Philippines-New People's Army-National Democratic Front) is in effect, we expect the implementation of the government's peace and development prrograms in the countryside to proceed much faster," he said.

Guerrero stressed these projects will bring much needed services to remote barangays and will act as catalyst for further growth and development.

President Rodrigo R. Duterte urged Congress to hasten his proposal to change the form of government from the present unitary type to federal system.

The President made the statement in a speech delivered in this year's commemoration of National Heroes Day to honor the Filipino heroes at the "Libingan ng mga Bayani" in Taguig City on Monday.
