Sandiganbayan dismisses graft raps vs. ex-President Arroyo on USD 329-M NBN-ZTE deal

The Sandiganbayan has dismissed the graft cases against former President and now House Deputy Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo over the alleged anomalous USD 329-M National Broadband Network-ZTE contract signed during her term as Chief Executive.

The Sandiganbayan granted Mrs. Arroyo's demurrer to evidence, a motion to dismiss a case based on insufficiency of the evidence presented by the prosecution, saying that the prosecution "did not sufficiently prove the guilt of the accused."

Atty. Laurence Arroyo, the former president's counsel, told reporters on Friday that Mrs. Arroyo has been "vindicated anew."

Duterte proclaims national state of emergency

President Rodrigo Duterte has signed a proclamation declaring a ‘State of National Emergency on Account of Lawless Violence,” Palace officials have confirmed Monday.

In an interview in Davao City, Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea said the President signed the one-page proclamation shortly before leaving for the ASEAN Summit in Laos.

Medialdea said that the spate of terror attacks like kidnappings, beheadings and finally the Davao night market bombing prodded the President to issue the proclamation.

He also stressed it is not martial law, no curfew is being imposed and there is no timeline for its implementation.

PRC denies issuing warning to public to avoid going to malls due to security threats

The Philippine Red Cross called on the public on Sunday to not believe in circulating social messages that the Red Cross is asking the public to avoid going to shopping malls because of security threats.

In the PRC facebook page, Senator Richard Gordon, chairman and CEO of PRC, denied that they issued advisories urging the public to refrain from going to malls due to the security threats,
